The Circle Facilitator Pathway

Our Circle Facilitator Pathway is a comprehensive professional learning experience designed for ANYONE and ANY GROUP to help individuals and organizations build lasting cultures of connection, trust, and belonging through the practice of Circle facilitation. Rather than offering a single workshop, this pathway develops facilitators in progressive stages, moving from practical skills to deep understanding to complete organizational independence.

Our Essential and Theory trainings can each be completed in one day, or combined for a two-day training, with our Train the Trainer model for advanced facilitators looking to make the practice sustainable without outside support. In addition, a vital part of becoming an effective Circle facilitator is getting hands-on experience with seasoned Circle Facilitators who help scaffold.

Learn more about Circle

The Essential Circle Training

The journey begins with the Circle Facilitator Essentials Training, where participants learn the core skills needed to confidently facilitate meaningful Circles.

The Circle Facilitator Essentials Training is a highly interactive, hands-on program designed to equip participants with the fundamental skills needed to confidently facilitate meaningful Circle experiences. The training can be delivered as a single four-hour workshop or divided into four one-hour sessions, making it flexible for schools, organizations, and teams.

This experience removes the guesswork from facilitation by providing a simple, step-by-step framework that guides participants through the entire process — from preparation to execution. Throughout the training, participants learn by doing. Each concept is taught, practiced, and reinforced through interactive drills, coaching, and real facilitation exercises that build confidence through repetition.

Our goal is to make Circle facilitation approachable, practical, and repeatable. By focusing on the essential skills and providing opportunities for immediate application, participants develop the competence needed to lead circles with confidence.

The Theory of Circle Training

The next stage, Circle Facilitator Theory Training, explores the science, psychology, philosophy, and history behind the practice.

The Circle Facilitator Theory Training is the next step in the facilitator development pathway. Designed for graduates of the Circle Facilitator Essentials Training — or for experienced facilitators seeking a deeper understanding — this course explores the science, philosophy, psychology, and history behind effective Circle facilitation.

While the Essentials Training focuses on how to facilitate a Circle, the Theory Training explores why the process works. Participants take a deep dive into the mechanisms that make Circles such a powerful tool for building trust, strengthening relationships, fostering belonging, and creating meaningful dialogue.

Developed from the passion and experience of the Sweethearts & Heroes team, this training examines the evidence, research, and principles that inform our approach. Participants explore the psychological foundations of human connection, the philosophical ideas that shape our work, the historical roots of Circle practices, and the practical science behind creating emotionally safe environments where authentic conversations can thrive.

By understanding the reasoning behind each facilitation choice, participants move beyond simply following a framework — they become intentional practitioners. This deeper level of knowledge empowers facilitators to adapt with confidence, respond thoughtfully to the needs of their groups, and create richer, more impactful Circle experiences.

Train the Trainer Circle Training

The final stage, Circle Facilitator Train-the-Trainer Circle Training, empowers organizations to become self-sustaining and to train future staff.

The Circle Facilitator Train-the-Trainer Training is the culminating step in the facilitator development pathway. While the Essentials and Theory Trainings are designed to develop individual facilitators, this experience is designed to develop an organization's capacity to sustain and grow its own circle culture.

Participants learn not only how to facilitate effective circles, but also how to teach others to become confident facilitators themselves. Drawing from years of experience, the Sweethearts & Heroes team shares the methods, coaching strategies, instructional techniques, and practical insights we've developed through training facilitators across diverse schools, organizations, and communities.

The training includes a concise review of the principles behind Circle facilitation, but its primary focus is on teaching participants how to teach. Through guided practice, coaching, and instructional frameworks, future trainers learn to develop new facilitators, provide meaningful feedback, build confidence, and create a lasting culture of effective Circle facilitation within their own organization.

Rather than relying on outside support indefinitely, organizations gain the knowledge and tools to cultivate their own lineage of skilled facilitators — creating a sustainable system that can continue to grow for years to come.
